Gethsemane

"Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation".  He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done".  An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.  And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.  When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.  "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation"."

Luke 22 v 39-46

Jesus told the disciples "pray that you will not fall into temptation".  Then he prays himself and returns to find them, not praying, but asleep.
According to Jesus, staying from temptation is more important than sleep, it's more important than comfort.  Therefore the question: Why are you sleeping?  Jesus would have known how tired the disciples truly were on this night. But he knew this was a time when it was very important for them to pray so they would not fall into temptation. It was for this time.

Jesus himself slept in the boat in the storm and that was not wrong- it was not this time.

There is a time when prayer is more important than sleep, than other things.  That is when the battle for temptation is high.

Temptation was high at this time for Jesus- so he prayed.  The temptation was to not take the cup. The prayer was to submit the cup to God.  Jesus pleaded the cup be taken away.  He didn't reject the cup without his fathers permission.  But the father made it clear the Jesus must drink the cup.  Jesus accepted Gods will and received strength.

Through prayer, we too, can submit ourselves to the will of the father, aligning with the holy spirit's desires within us- we can accept whatever God's will is for the situation, and receive the strength we need.

There are things we don't want to do that we need to do.  Big things.  To prepare, we pray.
There are things we really wish we could do, but we shouldn't do.  Big things.  To avoid, we pray.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.  The spirit is willing that all be saved- but the flesh doesn't want to evangelize.  The spirit is willing that we are self-controlled- but the flesh wants no restrictions.  The spirit is willing that we step into our gifts and use them and grow and stretch in them- but the flesh wants the comfort zone, the safe zone.

Through prayer, we too, can submit ourselves to the will of the father, aligning with the holy spirit's desires within us- we can accept whatever God's will is for the situation, and receive the strength we need.

What we need to know is, is it the time...to get in high gear of intense, purposeful and priority prayer.  Pray for wisdom to know when it's ok to sleep in the storm, and the wisdom to know when you are in danger of the storm coming upon you if you do...

Reflections on the book of Ruth: Naomi's bitterness and blessing

“...the Lords hand has gone out against me” Ruth 1 v 13  So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem.  When they arrived in Bethlehem the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, ‘Can this be Naomi?’ Don’t call me Naomi, she told them.  Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.  I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.  Why call me Naomi?  The Lord has afflicted me; the almighty has brought misfortune upon me” Ruth 1 v 19-21 Sometimes I think about seeing old friends and I think their expectations would be disappointed.  I may think of my youth, when first saved, and think how cheery and free I was- working, capable, social.  But one thing I read about Naomi’s possible musings in an article was whether she remembered the peace with God she used to enjoy in her youth…and that added to her sorrow. I feel a great deal of stress- and not a lot of peace- I look fo...

Rebel thoughts

Rebel thoughts are thoughts that set themselves up against the knowledge of God.  We don't want them but sometimes we accept them as innocent unknowingly.  These thoughts can be sneaky so we need to identify them to be able to take them down.  When I say take down, I mean wrestle down to the ground in submission...demolish... "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" 2 Corinthians 10 v 5 What is the knowledge we have of God? His attributes His character His promises All God is for me in Christ Jesus. Which of my thoughts are setting themselves up against the knowledge of God?  The devil will be encouraging these thoughts.  The fruit of such thoughts will be the opposite of what God gives; joy, peace, hope.  So what thoughts are causing depression, anxiety/restlessness and hopelessness? These are some of my recent rebel thoughts...

Poems

The following poem was a personal reflection of both life's realities and faiths hope, particularly the power of Jesus Ressurection in us to give us a freshness and newness and freedom from our past. I'm really feeling a theme of 'freshness' for this season from easter and ahead... Ressurection Morning Seasons come and seasons go Its hard to keep up With the ebb and flow We try to prepare and take care But I struggle, you know Past seasons holding on Can't seem to shake free Things from the past holding me Telling me I'm not free Feel the freshness of the morning A new day dawning Crisp air Birds singing New beginnings Hope is beckoning to me He makes all things new Ressurection morning Bringing me hope Power Strong and undefeatable He makes me Naomi Richardson The following I wrote for children to make a connection with the sweetness of Jesus love and the sweetness of chocolate easter eggs. Oh so sweet Here's a chocolate, oh so sw...
